TMJ

TMJ (which stands for temporomandibular joint) disorders affect over 10 million people in the United States. It has become common practice for dentists to treat these disorders. The TMJ joint is where the lower jaw connects to the skull. This is where the jaw opens and closes in order for the patient to eat, chew, and speak. When a patient suffers from a TMJ disorder, he will find that the movements in this joint have been compromised. He will often suffer from significant head and neck pain. For some patients, the jaw may lock. This condition will be accompanied by a piercing pain and a reduced ability to eat or speak. Call today for a consultation if you believe that you are suffering from a TMJ disorder.

WHY DO PEOPLE GET TMJ DISORDERS?

TMJ disorders may be caused by a variety of contributing factors:

  • Constant pressure may be placed on the TMJ if you consistently grind or clench your teeth.
  • A traumatic injury to your TMJ due to an accident, such as a sports injury or a car accident.
  • TMJ disorders can be caused by rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.
  • Regular stress can contribute to TMJ disorders.

TMJ disorders are often overlooked or misdiagnosed. It usually requires the skill and training of a dentist to know for sure. Please contact our office and discover the great difference that TMJ treatments can have.
